Dropoetin is a synthetic form of Epoetin Alfa (Erythropoietin) and is utilized to supplement the hormone when there is a deficiency. Erythropoietin is naturally generated in the body, mainly by the kidneys. It plays a crucial role in regulating the production of red blood cells, which are responsible for oxygen transport in the bloodstream. A deficiency in Erythropoietin can lead to various forms of severe anemia, resulting in insufficient oxygen supply to different body areas.
Dropoetin is prescribed for treating anemia in individuals with chronic kidney disease, HIV, or malignancy, as well as for cancer patients experiencing anemia due to chemotherapy. Additionally, Dropoetin may be administered to boost red blood cell production in patients scheduled for specific surgical procedures.
Dropoetin is contraindicated for individuals with a history or current presence of any of the following conditions: hypersensitivity to its components; gout; cardiovascular diseases; blood clotting disorders; cancer; deficiencies in folic acid, iron, or vitamin B12; kidney issues; bone disorders; inflammation; pure red cell aplasia; infections; strokes; seizures; porphyrin metabolism disorders; as well as for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Patients should inform their healthcare provider about any existing health conditions. Dropoetin should not be prescribed for infants. However, it has demonstrated safety and efficacy for children over one month old requiring dialysis for chronic renal failure.
